The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) launched the annual bursary competition for first- year agriculture students on Friday 14th September 2018.

The competition, which sees 22 businesses and organisations from across the NI Agri-Food Industry each provide a bursary of £1,000, is open to first year agriculture and horticulture students who complete an assignment which is set by each of the businesses.

With over 60 students in the year group, competition is strong for the 22 available bursaries.

At the launch of the competition, which supports agricultural learning in the next generation, students had the opportunity to speak to each of the 22 businesses and organisations to find out more about each of the individual assignments.

Dunbia are one of the companies who are providing a £1,000 bursary as part of the competition at CAFRE Greenmount campus.

Emma Nelson, Agricultural Development Officer at Dunbia who recently completed the companies Graduate Scheme, attended the event at the college.  Speaking of the event Emma commented,

“Having been involved in the scheme for a number of years, Dunbia have first-hand seen the benefit in initiatives like this which opens doors for the next generation into the Agri-Food industry.”

Students who wish to enter the competition are asked to write a report based on the title;

“Discuss the implications of Brexit on the Northern Ireland sheep sector, including potential impacts of farm incomes and lamb markets.”  Those who are successful in obtaining a bursary, will be presented with their winning at an event in December.
