The 2015 Wales YFC Lamb Initiative, organised in partnership with meat processor Dunbia and Sainsbury’s reached its finale with a prize-giving reception at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.
Two awards were presented – the Lamb Initiative Supplier of the Year which recognises the Wales YFC member who supplies the highest percentage of lambs in the correct specification over a year and the Lamb Initiative Carcase Competition which was judged by Sainsbury’s Technical Manager and Master Butcher Julien Pursglove.
The winner of the 2015 Supplier of the Year is Andrew Phillips who farms 1600 ewes and a herd of continental cross cattle with his parents at Windsor Farm in Lamphey in Pembrokeshire. Presenting the award, Mr Phil Hambling, Sainsbury’s Agriculture Manager commented: “The importance of presenting in-spec lambs for processing cannot be over-emphasised and it is through initiatives like the Wales YFC Lamb Initiative that we can really get this message across. I am delighted to present Andrew with the Supplier of the Year Award and look forward to receiving more quality lambs throughout 2016.”
The second award of the evening was awarded for the winning entry in the lamb Initiative carcass competition. Over twenty lambs were entered into this year’s competition with the top five judged in the Carcass Hall at the Winter Fair. The winner with a E3L lamb weighing 19.5kg was William Gittoes who also secured the reserve and third place carcass prize.
Carys Vaughan, Wales YFC Rural Affairs Chairman said “We are delighted that the competition now in its second year is proving so popular. The lambs entered are of an excellent standard and it’s a great opportunity to show off a world class product that’s produced by Wales YFC members. We are very grateful to Dunbia for their continued support for Wales’ Young Farmers’.
Alison Harvey, Dunbia Agriculture Manager for Lamb said: “Once again, Dunbia has been delighted with the Wales YFC Lamb Initiative. This initiative was launched 6 years ago with two primary aims – to create a consistent and quality lamb supply for Sainsbury’s range and to educate young farmers in what the processor and retailer wants. The Initiative has gone from strength to strength with the Carcass Competition added two years ago and has proven very successful. Dunbia adopts a partnership approach to all our business, working on the premise that the future of our industry depends on all parties in the supply chain working together to secure a sustainable industry for all. The Wales YFC Initiative is a perfect example of a successful partnership in practice.”
Both competitions have been generously sponsored by Hybu Cig Cymru and Dunbia. Both members winning an engraved award, I-pad mini and certificate.
