Dunbia has welcomed Scottish sheep farmers to a live to dead event at its plant in Preston.
The farmers who supply lambs to Dunbia via the livestock procurement co-operative Farm Stock (Scotland), visited the Preston plant as part of a project aimed at improving lamb supply chain efficiency.
“By seeing exactly what Dunbia’s retail customers want and discussing the issues faced by both Dunbia and producers, we are aiming to work better together to lift the margins for all in the chain,” explains Kev Bevan, Senior Consultant, SAC Consulting who co-ordinated the visit. “Over this past year, Dunbia has worked very closely with us, attending events in Scotland to speak directly to Scottish producers which has been much appreciated. This partnership approach provides us all with a firm basis to work from.”
During the event, the farmers were provided with a cutting demonstration before a walk through the lamb chills and retail production. They were shown the issues involved with over fat lambs and the importance of specification.
“The live to dead events are an important tool for educating producers on retailer requirements,” explains Rob Lea, Group Agricultural Supply Chain Manager for Dunbia. “Producing lamb that meets customer requirements and specification for taste, tenderness and value for money in addition to provenance and traceability is a critical part of the selection process. These events are an ideal way to highlight the processes and staff required to achieve a product suitable for retail. Dunbia is one of the leading meat processors in the UK with two facilities in Scotland, one in Elgin and one in Ayr. It is the largest processor of lamb in the UK handling over 1.7m lambs each year.
